Cross-docking is a technique in the "logistics", or supply chain management, industry of unloading goods from an incoming truck or train, and loading those goods in outbound trucks or trains, with little or no storage time in between. Reasons for cross docking include changing method of transportation, sorting goods going to different locations, or to consolidate goods coming from different locations into a single shipment.
"True" cross-dock operations are done directly, with little or no warehousing. But more often, cross-docking operations use large operating areas where inbound shipments are unloaded and sorted, or consolidated, and then stored while the outbound shipment is completed. One of the goals of cross-docking is to reduce inventory storage costs and streamline the flow of goods between supplier and manufacturer at the same time. Uses for Cross Docking
